CRIC Statement In Response To The Sale Of MRIA Assets To Third Parties

TORONTO, December, 2018—
The Canadian Research Insights Council is pleased to have been invited to take a seat on the Board of the Market Research Institute International (MRII), the preeminent provider of market research education globally.

The MRII was formed in 1996 by a consortium of international market research associations. Through a unique cooperation with the University of Georgia, it has provided courses to almost 10,000 research practitioners around the world, including many Canadians who have used MRII courses to meet the former CMRP certification requirements.

Canada is fortunate to have a rich set of educational offerings in market research through the community college system. But with the termination of MRIA’s courses, working research practitioners have few self-paced and flexible options. The MRII courses are an online, high quality, cost effective option endorsed by CRIC.

While work remains to be completed on reestablishing a Canadian professional certification process, CRIC fully expects that the MRII course sequence will continue to play an important role in fulfilling future certification requirements, supplemented by an ethics and standards course as was the case since the inception of CMRP. In the meantime, the MRII courses are open to any researcher interested in learning more about a specific topic or research method.

The current MRII board already includes three Canadians. Chuck Chakrapani, President of Leger Analytics and CRIC Board member, is an Ex-Officio Subject Matter Expert on the MRII board and has been heavily involved in curricular development. Barry Watson, President and CEO of Environics Research and CRIC Chair, serves on the MRII board and was its president for 2014. David Scowcroft of IPSOS Healthcare joined the MRII board last year. In addition, Dan Coates, the incoming president of MRII, began his career with Angus Reid in Vancouver and now heads yPulse, a company specializing in millennial research in NYC.
