New Survey Highlights Issues Of Importance To Indigenous Peoples Leading Up To The Federal Election

The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has released a survey of Indigenous peoples focusing on their concerns leading up to the October 21st federal election. Conducted by Environics Research, this study marks the first Indigenous-specific snapshot of voters in the 2019 campaign; and surveyed 1,024 people self-identifying as First Nations, Inuit or Métis.

The study explored and highlighted a range of topics and issues of importance to Indigenous peoples, including:

• 55% say drinking water quality is an extremely important issue to them in the upcoming federal election.
• 49% say access to high-quality health care that is culturally appropriate is an extremely important issue when deciding who to vote for.
• 49% say Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls (#MMIWG) is an extremely important issue when deciding who to vote for.

About the study

This study was conducted by Environics Research between September 4 and 13, 2019 using a mixed-mode sample of 1,024 Indigenous Peoples of voting age (18+). Special care was taken at the questionnaire design stage to maximize the comparability of the data collected through the self-completion (online) and interviewer-assisted (telephone) methodologies.
