The central story of Canada’s 2026 social media landscape is one of stability on the surface and diversity beneath it. While overall platform usage and preferences have changed little since 2025, significant differences across generations, genders and Social Values reveal the distinct audiences that make up each platform and the cultural characteristics that distinguish them.
Facebook still attracts the largest share of users, engaging about two-thirds of Canadians weekly. YouTube has strengthened its second-place position, while Instagram remains firmly in third, attracting about twice as many weekly users as the fourth-place platform, TikTok.
TikTok is especially important among Millennials and Generation Z, even though its total-population reach is lower. Reddit and X attract smaller but highly distinctive audiences, while LinkedIn has meaningful reach, and its users – who value brands, technology, and influence – are an appealing target for marketers and thought leaders. Newer X alternatives have not yet achieved mass weekly adoption. Their smaller audiences may still be strategically important, but Canadians have not migrated en masse from X to a successor.
The opportunity for organizations is not simply to be present across social media, but to understand the audience and culture of each platform well enough to communicate with purpose.

Social media use in Canada: 2026 trends, audiences and Social Values
Social media remains woven into Canadians’ everyday lives – a place where people keep up with friends, discover products, follow public conversations, learn new skills and fill spare moments with entertainment. But “social media” is not a single, uniform environment. Each platform attracts a different combination of generations, and users bring distinct interests and motivations to each setting. A message that feels credible and engaging on LinkedIn may not work on TikTok or Reddit. Understanding who uses each platform and the values that distinguish those users, is therefore essential for organizations deciding where and how to communicate.
Environics Research’s ongoing tracking of Canadians’ weekly social media habits allows us to separate measurable audience behaviour from the narratives – sometimes loud but not well supported by evidence – that surround particular platforms. Our 2026 findings suggest that the landscape is evolving, but not necessarily through the wholesale disruption that headlines sometimes imply.

Facebook continues to be the most widely used platform in Canada: 67% of Canadians report using it at least once a week. Its reach is unchanged from the 2025 study (also 67%), reinforcing its position as an established, broad-audience channel. YouTube ranks second, reaching 55% of Canadians weekly, followed by Instagram at 41%. After these three leading platforms, usage drops considerably.
Meanwhile, 9% of Canadians say they do not regularly use any social media platform. The year-over-year picture is one of relative stability at the top. Facebook and Instagram remain at the same levels reported in 2025, while YouTube has increased from 53% to 55%. TikTok has shifted from 18% to 20%, X from 17% to 16%, LinkedIn from 18% to 16%, and Reddit from 15% to 13%
These movements are modest, but this overall picture of stability is itself strategically relevant. These findings show why assumptions about universal growth or decline should be tested against deeper Canadian usage data.

X’s competitors remain niche – Public discussion about text-based social media has often focused on whether users are leaving X for newer alternatives. So far, the 2026 findings indicate that no single competitor has achieved comparable weekly reach in Canada.
X is used weekly by 16% of Canadians. No similar platform comes close: Threads: 4%, Bluesky: 2%, Truth Social: 1%, Rednote: 1%.
Threads has the largest audience among these alternatives, but its reach remains far below X. Bluesky has also generated attention, yet its weekly Canadian audience is still small. The practical lesson is that media attention and widespread adoption are not the same thing. Emerging platforms may be important for particular communities or conversations, but organizations should evaluate them according to the specific audiences they offer rather than assuming they have replaced established channels.
Generation remains one of the strongest dividing lines
The total population figures conceal substantial generational differences. Among Generation X, Facebook is the clear leader at 70%, followed by YouTube at 50% and Instagram at 43%. LinkedIn reaches 19%, while TikTok is used by 15%.
Millennials use more platforms regularly. Facebook reaches 72%, while YouTube sits at 69%, and Instagram reaches 54%. Under a quarter use TikTok weekly (23%), and 21% use LinkedIn. For Generation Z, YouTube and Instagram lead at 69% and 59% respectively. Facebook remains significant at 53%, while TikTok reaches 49% and LinkedIn 17%.
This means Facebook continues to reach a majority of every generation measured, but it doesn’t lead in every cohort. It’s dominant among Generation X and Millennials, while Instagram and YouTube dominate among Generation Z.

Younger Canadians are therefore not simply replacing one platform with another. They are participating across a wider range of environments, with Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit and X each serving different purposes.
For communicators, this makes platform-specific planning more important. A campaign targeting Generation Z may need to work across several complementary channels, whereas a campaign aimed at Generation X may be able to concentrate more heavily on Facebook and YouTube.
Online habits can differ by gender
Age cohorts are not homogeneous in their social media habits. Gender can also make a difference in the online environments people choose. Among Generation Z, for example, Instagram reaches 73% of women weekly but only 46% of men, while YouTube is used by roughly seven in ten of both genders.
Gender differences by platform matter in part because Environics’ longitudinal research indicates that young men and women are also further apart in their attitudes toward gender equality than their older counterparts, a trend that’s showing up online and contributing to distinct online subcultures and reference points for Gen Z men and women. Regardless of whether social media has played any causal role in this trend, communicators will need to think beyond “reaching Gen Z” and consider which parts of Gen Z they are reaching, where, and with what language and messengers.
Social Values reveal what platform users are looking for
Demographics tell us where audiences are, but they do not fully explain what motivates them. Environics’ Social Values research adds a psychographic layer by identifying the values on which weekly users of different platforms stand out.
These findings should not be read as descriptions of every individual user. Rather, they identify tendencies that are more pronounced within a platform audience and can help organizations shape tone, creative execution and messaging.
Facebook: trust, expression and connection
Weekly Facebook users stand out for Confidence in Advertising, indicating a greater tendency to trust and use advertising as a source of information. They also score high on with Personal Expression, Social Learning, Joy of Consumption and Attraction to Nature. This combination suggests an audience that can be receptive to advertising, but also values authentic self-expression, human connection and opportunities to learn from different people and backgrounds.
For organizations, Facebook remains well suited to accessible, informative and community-oriented communication. Messages that combine practical information with relatable personal stories may be particularly effective.
Instagram: novelty, aesthetics and visible status
Instagram’s visual culture is reflected in the values of its weekly users. They stand out for Ostentatious Consumption, Pursuit of Novelty, Enthusiasm for New Technology, Pursuit of Intensity and Need for Status Recognition. This is an audience attracted to new experiences, polished presentation, and products or ideas that help express taste and identity.
Brands communicating on Instagram should think beyond simply repurposing material created for other channels. Strong aesthetics, novelty, aspiration and opportunities for attention-grabbing self-expression are central to the platform’s appeal.
TikTok: discovery, technology and consumption as expression
Weekly TikTok users are also characterized by Pursuit of Novelty and Enthusiasm for New Technology. Additional distinguishing values include Entitlement, Consumptivity and Importance of Aesthetics. These users tend to be interested in discovering new products and experiences, staying informed about categories they care about, and using aesthetic choices as a form of personal expression.
For marketers, this helps explain TikTok’s influence over discovery and trends. Effective content should feel current and visually engaging, but it should also provide users with something to explore, try or share.
X: intensity, innovation and influence
Weekly X users share several characteristics with Reddit and LinkedIn audiences. They stand out for Pursuit of Novelty, Enthusiasm for New Technology, Pursuit of Intensity, Consumption Evangelism and Importance of Brand. This suggests an audience drawn to fast-moving conversations, emerging developments and opportunities to influence others. Despite continued debate surrounding the platform and the availability of several alternatives, X retains a distinct Canadian audience.
Organizations using X should prioritize timeliness, clear points of view and content that contributes meaningfully to active conversations.
LinkedIn: leadership, optimism and brands
Weekly LinkedIn users stand out for Enthusiasm for New Technology, Consumption Evangelism, Need for Status Recognition, Personal Optimism and Importance of Brand. Taken together, these values describe an audience interested in innovation, advancement and influence. LinkedIn users may be especially inclined to learn about products and services, form opinions about them, and share those opinions through well-developed personal and professional networks.
This makes LinkedIn relevant not only for recruitment or corporate announcements, but also for thought leadership, innovation stories, expert-led content and credible brand building.
Reddit: curiosity with an anti-establishment edge
Weekly Reddit users stand out for Interest in the Unexplained, Pursuit of Novelty, Enthusiasm for New Technology, Rejection of Authority and Consumptivity.
Reddit’s audience is curious and technologically engaged, but also inclined to question established rules and institutions. Its topic-based communities allow users to develop deep knowledge around particular products, interests and cultural niches.
Organizations should approach Reddit differently from conventional advertising environments. Detailed information, transparency and genuine participation are more likely to succeed than highly polished promotional language. Attempts to control the conversation may be met with skepticism or even provoke backlash.
What the 2026 findings mean for communicators
For organizations, the implications are straightforward:
Do not declare a platform dead or essential based on headlines alone
Use measured audience behaviour to guide investment.
Plan by generation, but don’t stop there
Demographics identify where people are; Social Values help explain how to engage them.
Avoid posting identical content everywhere
Each platform has its own motivations, expectations and communication norms.
Balance reach with relevance
A smaller platform may be more valuable when its audience closely matches an organization’s objectives.
Avoid posting identical content everywhere
An effective communications strategy still needs channels capable of reaching them.
In 2026, nearly every major platform plays a different role in Canadians’ lives. The opportunity for organizations is not simply to be present across social media, but to understand the audience and culture of each platform well enough to communicate with purpose.
