Canadian Travel Trends 2026 | Tourism Outlook Report

With 84% of Canadians planning at least one overnight leisure trip in the next 12–18 months, compared with 80% in 2025, demand for travel remains strong. But knowing that Canadians intend to travel is only the beginning.

The 2026 Canadian Travel & Tourism Outlook Report provides timely, practical research for destinations, attractions and tourism organizations seeking a deeper understanding of Canadian travel trends without the investment or lead time of custom research. Based on a national survey of 1,603 Canadian travellers, the report examines travel intentions, destination choices, trip-planning behaviours and the experiences Canadians are seeking across local, domestic, U.S. and international travel.

By exploring how preferences vary by destination and traveller profile, the report goes beyond where Canadians plan to go. It offers a clearer picture of how they are planning future trips, what they want to experience and which factors influence their travel decisions. These insights can help destination marketing organizations, attractions and other tourism businesses develop more relevant strategies, visitor experiences and marketing messages.

Understanding Canadian Travellers in 2026

Drawing on the 2026 Canadian Travel & Tourism Outlook Study, a spring 2026 survey of 1,603 Canadian travellers aged 18 and older, the report explores Canadians’ upcoming travel plans across three key areas.

Section 1: Traveller Intentions and Activities

Understanding what Canadians want from their trips helps tourism organizations move beyond simply promoting a destination.

It enables them to develop relevant visitor experiences, itineraries and tourism marketing based on the activities travellers value whether that means family connection and flexibility closer to home or more curated, premium experiences abroad.

38% of domestic trips include visiting family, compared with 21% of international trips.

What experiences and activities are driving Canadian travel in 2026?

How can tourism organizations respond to growing demand for particular travel experiences?

Section 2: Travel Destinations

Canadians are planning both domestic and international travel. Western Europe leads international interest, while Ontario, British Columbia, Québec and Atlantic Canada stand out among Canadian destinations.

Understanding these travel patterns can help tourism organizations assess demand, identify priority audiences and position their destinations around the types of trips Canadians are considering.

Western Europe accounts for 37% of planned international destinations, making it the most-selected international region.

What influences Canadians when choosing between domestic and international destinations?

How can destination marketing organizations position their region as a must-visit destination for Canadian travellers?

Section 3: Travel Planning Resources

Canadians use a range of information sources and trip-planning tools to research destinations and make travel decisions.

Understanding the Canadian travel-planning journey can help tourism marketers reach prospective visitors with the right information and inspiration at the right time.

18% of travellers expect to use AI for travel research, up from 9% in 2025.

Which travel resources and information sources influence trip planning?

How can tourism organizations connect with travellers throughout the decision-making process?
