It’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week, and I have been reflecting on what it means to celebrate neurodivergence.
Celebration matters. Neurodivergent people bring creativity, insight, innovation, and entirely different ways of seeing the world, and those differences deserve recognition. But if celebration is where the conversation starts and ends, we risk missing something essential.
Before neurodiversity can be meaningfully celebrated, it has to be understood not just as a set of strengths that can be conveniently highlighted, but as a lived experience that shapes how people process information, manage emotion, and respond to stress. An individuals neurodivergence influences how they navigate workplaces and systems built on assumptions about how people are expected to move through the world.

What Neurodivergence Can Feel Like in This Moment
As someone who lives with ADHD, I tend to become especially more aware of my neurodivergence in moments when my brain feels especially alive: when I am energized, making unexpected connections, or seeing possibilities others might overlook, but also when the world feels chaotic, relentless, and hard to shut out. That is part of what I have been reflecting on this week.
Peer reviewed research suggests that roughly 15 to 20 percent of people are neurodivergent, and many experience differences in attention regulation, sensory processing, and emotional intensity. Understanding this about my brain has been important because it shifts the story away from deficiency and toward a more honest understanding of difference. The same brain that can generate big ideas and notice what others may miss can also need more structure, clarity, or support when the world feels overwhelming.
The Hidden Cost of Processing and Masking
Research on ADHD, points to differences in how stimuli are filtered and prioritized, along with higher rates of emotional dysregulation, which can make it harder to tune things out or neatly compartmentalize. In a world shaped by constant exposure to war, genocide, instability, climate anxiety, and social inequity, that is not simply a matter of discipline or focus. It reflects the fact that these realities may be taken in more intensely, and with fewer internal buffers, by a neurodivergent brain.
For many neurodivergent people, that intensity is often accompanied by the added pressure to ‘mask’: to adjust, filter, and present oneself in ways that align with neurotypical expectations, even while carrying a heavier cognitive and emotional load. What Neurodivergent Perspectives Can Teach Us
Many neurodivergent people move through the world questioning assumptions, noticing inconsistencies, and struggling with processes that prioritize appearance over substance or routine over meaning. Those traits can be framed as challenges in traditional environments, but they are also the same traits that drive innovation, creativity, and systems-level thinking. Research on cognitive diversity shows that teams with varied thinking styles are often better equipped to solve complex problems because they approach them from different angles.
There is a particular kind of insight that comes from navigating environments that were not built for you. You learn not only to adapt, but to question, to find alternative paths, and to see where systems break down or exclude. That perspective can be undervalued, but it may be exactly what this moment requires.
Many of the challenges we are facing across healthcare, climate, economics, and social systems cannot be solved by maintaining the status quo. They require new ways of thinking, organizing, and questioning the assumptions that underpin our systems. In many ways, neurodivergent people have been practicing that their entire lives.
The Opportunity In Front of Us
So, this Neurodiversity Celebration Week, I find myself thinking less about recognition and celebration alone and more about what it means to truly understand neurodivergence in all its complexity. Because in a world that is already strained and changing, the question is not just how neurodivergent people can fit into existing systems, but what becomes possible when neurodivergent ways of thinking help reshape them.
