Environics Research survey informs peer-reviewed CJC Open article

The article draws on a quota-based national online survey administered by Environics Research for Heart Valve Voice Canada to assess valvular heart disease awareness, symptom recognition, concern levels and stethoscope screening practices among Canadians aged 50+.

Environics Research was commissioned by Heart Valve Voice Canada, to administer the survey that helped inform the peer-reviewed article accepted for publication by CJC Open.

CJC Open, an official journal of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS), has accepted for publication a peer-reviewed article based on a cross-sectional, quota-based national online survey administered by Environics Research, a national market research firm, for Heart Valve Voice Canada, a patient-advocacy organization. The article draws on responses from 1,000 Canadians aged 50 and older, collected from January 20 to February 1, 2025.

The results of the survey found that 49 percent of respondents were aware of valvular heart disease, while 7% expressed concern. Although 75 percent had visited a primary care provider in the previous 12 months, only 48 percent recalled having a stethoscope check. In addition, the results identified gender-based disparities in screening and rural disparities in primary care access and VHD awareness.

“We’re proud to have collaborated with our fellow co-authors and Heart Valve Voice Canada on research that contributes to peer-reviewed medical literature. This work shows how rigorous, patient-directed survey research can identify practical gaps in awareness and care and support evidence-informed action to improve early detection.”

Population-level evidence on patient awareness and real-world detection practices remains limited. By helping fill these evidence gaps, research can foster informed conversations and support targeted, practical approaches to earlier VHD detection without increasing unnecessary burden on primary care providers.
