Globe & Mail: Inside the Priorities of Canadian Car Buyers

Environics Research partnered with Clutch to uncover the key factors shaping Canadians’ vehicle choices.

What matters most to Canadians when buying a car

Environics Research recently partnered with online used-car retailer Clutch to explore what drives Canadians’ vehicle choices. The national study of more than 2,100 Canadians was featured in The Globe and Mail.

The findings show that practical considerations outweigh the appeal of advanced features. Reliability and good mileage are top priorities, while used-car buyers also seek reassurance about a vehicle’s condition. Eighty percent said a full inspection report was very important, 79 percent said the same of mechanic certification, and 66 percent prioritized affordability.

prioritized affordability.

The research also highlights why SUVs remain popular: they combine winter traction, cargo space, safety, comfort and room for family. For budget-conscious buyers, vehicles between three and six years old—with fewer than 100,000 kilometres—may offer a balance of value and dependability.
